Frederic Leighton (1830-1896) was one of the most famous British artists of the Victorian age. Received many international awards and honours. In 1855, Queen Victoria bought his first major painting and in 1878 he became the President of the Royal Academy of Arts. His private life was closely guarded. Leighton never married, lived and traveled alone. Rumours say that he had a child with one of his models. Before he died from a heart failure, he was ennobled Lord Leighton, Baron of Stretton (being the first English painter to be so honoured).
